Control Freak

The new Control Freak is Sea To Summit's latest, compact, fast and light load system for rogainers, adventure racers, cyclists and runners. It is a beautifully stable, comfortable, dynamic pack thanks to Sea To Summit's new Synchro-FORM Express airmesh hip system. This pack is supplied with the shoulder yoke, as illustrated, but is also designed to be used very effectively without this module.

The body contact surfaces of the Control Freak are airmesh. Zipped into the hip harness panel is a simple, firm, closed-cell foam insert. With the floating-vee side stabilisers system this insert provides sufficient stiffness for well balanced hip loading. If heavier loads are carried, eg one-litre water bottles each side plus a fully crammed bag, the shoulder yoke can be used to control the inevitable load bounce if you are running. If you mountain bike with a pack the independent, freely-moving Synchro-FORM hip wings will offer little resistance to your leg motions.

The bag is entered through an inverted-U zip. We have used an abrasion-proof coated zip here so a cover flap can be dispensed with. (This improves access to the bag but don't be misled, water will eventually seep through this type of zip - use a dry bag inside any pack for things that must remain dry when it's wet). Inside there is a horizontal, lightweight water bladder pouches.

The outside of the bag has a number of very useful features. The side bottle pockets have subtle 3-D design so that even a one litre bottle will fit without snatching volume from the main compartment. Importantly, the 'floating vee' hip side stabiliser straps also work on these bottles to hold them close. An additional mesh back pocket is provided centrally so you can slip small item there for quick access. On the Express hip wings there are two detachable zipped pockets for food on the go, control cards, etc. You can mount these very handy pockets according to your preference. For cyclists there are low-down reflectors and a mounting band for an LED tail light. Finally, there are two mounting options for the yoke tail straps, either on the top of the body contact panel or out, on the other side of the zip in the front seam. You can also use these square loops to lash additional gear in an emergency.

At 1.1kg the Control Freak may not be the lightest across the vast array of waist bags available today. What we do promise you is that the combination of stability, dynamic freedom and comfort is the best you are likely to find anywhere. You won't notice the little extra weight needed to achieve this result and you'll be free to keep you mind firmly on your course, the terrain and keeping up the fuel and water supply.
